Volunteer Interns

TESOL has received volunteers as interns since its beginning, including men and women from the USA, Scotland, England, Denmark, Netherlands, Congo and South Africa. Many have been recent university graduates, others recent retirees or persons seeking a sabbatical experience. Persons with formal teaching credentials are appreciated, but other experience with children and adolescents is often acceptable.

Volunteers are usually placed at TESOL through the United Methodist Individual Volunteers in Mission network (which does not require that a candidate be a member of the United Methodist Church) or similar organizations in the United Kingdom, etc.

Volunteer arrangements are necessarily negotiated on a case-by-case basis. Volunteers receive housing and a base allowance for expenses. For volunteers serving for a full school year, the school may refund their plane fare and pay the cost of their resident visas. Places are limited.

Serving at TESOL was a great experience. It's a school where you can help teach kids from all over the world, and you get to partner with teachers from Congo and various other countries. That's an atmosphere that's hard to duplicate. I learned a lot about teaching, other cultures, and myself. It was a challenging but very rewarding time.  Emily Padilla, Indiana
